Trading in Theory: Police Research and the Dialogue of the Deaf
Description
This dataset contains the final coded corpus used in the study, comprising 5,811 article abstracts published in nine specialist policing journals between 1 January 2007 and 31 July 2026. It includes bibliographic metadata, eligibility fields, theory-pathway classifications, method and evidence-source categories, theoretical-family mappings, confidence judgements and validation records. The coding traces how theory is introduced, rendered into operational forms and reconnected to findings, including measures of theoretical continuity, scale contraction and loss of visible genealogy. Coding was conducted through a researcher-directed, LLM-assisted procedure involving calibration, evidence-based classification, repeated auditing and researcher adjudication. The workbook has been cleaned and frozen as the publication-ready analytical dataset. Coding represents information visible in titles and abstracts and should not be interpreted as a definitive classification of the complete articles. Full coding definitions, validation procedures and analytical limitations are provided in the article and supplementary material.

Steps to reproduce
Open the frozen workbook and run the retained Python analysis script using Python 3.12 with pandas, NumPy and SciPy. The script imports the corpus, coding dictionary, family mappings and validation sheets; constructs derived variables; reproduces descriptive summaries, statistical models, tables and figures; and exports the final results. Partial 2026 data are excluded from complete-period models.
