Reporting Verbs in EFL Undergraduate Literature Reviews: Coded Data and Inter-Coder Reliability Materials (2021–2026)
Description
This dataset accompanies the study Reporting Verbs in EFL Undergraduate Literature Reviews: A Corpus-Based Study of Evidential and Epistemic Positioning. It contains the final coded data derived from 68 literature reviews written by Chinese undergraduate English majors between 2021 and 2026, comprising 142,577 words and 3,738 coded reporting-verb occurrences. The dataset includes the final aggregate coding table, a 397-record validation sample, inter-coder reliability results, the coding scheme/codebook, adjudication records, and post-adjudication audit materials. Reporting verbs were coded for process type, semantic group, Hyland subcategory, evidentiality, epistemic certainty, and evaluative stance. Inter-coder agreement was high across the retained coding dimensions (Cohen’s κ = .930–1.000). Student thesis full texts and extended concordance contexts are not included because of institutional access and student-authorship constraints. The dataset is intended to support transparency, reproducibility, and further research on reporting verbs, source use, evidentiality, and epistemic positioning in EFL academic writing.
