JAAD Visit Complexity Differs Between Scarring and Nonscarring Alopecia: A Five-Year DataDerm Analysis - Supplemental Material
Description
We examined dermatology visit complexity for scarring and nonscarring alopecias using ICD-10 diagnoses and outpatient E/M CPT codes from the AAD DataDerm registry (2019–2023), stratified by pre- vs post-2021 E/M coding updates, visit type (initial vs follow-up), and alopecia subtype. Visit complexity was categorized into low, moderate, and high complexity, with chi-square testing used for subgroup comparisons. The data demonstrate a shift toward higher-complexity coding after 2021 across all alopecia types, with consistently higher complexity among scarring alopecias compared with nonscarring alopecias. These supplementary tables and figures provide transparent distributions to support the interpretation of coding trends across alopecia subtypes; findings should be interpreted in the context of coding policy changes and the absence of patient-level outcomes.
