Description

Introduction: YouTubeTM has become increasingly popular among dental students and professionals for clinical procedures and academic updates. Thus, the aim was to assess the quality and accuracy of Vital Pulp Treatment (VPT) videos on YouTube™, using a novel scoring criteria. Methodology: First sixty VPT videos were surfed using each of the four keywords (total=240). Relevant videos were selected using a stringent inclusion/exclusion criteria. Quality of the selected videos was assessed using modified DISCERN index, Global Quality Score (GQS) and Video Information and Quality index (VIQI) tool. Accuracy was evaluated using a novel scoring system based on position statements issued by European Society of Endodontology (ESE) and American Association of Endodontists (AAE). Descriptive statistics were analysed. The correlation between the derived metrics was established using Spearman rank order. Level of significance was set at p < .05. Results: 50 videos were included, of which 14 were pulpotomy-based, 29 were pulp-capping based, and 7 videos were derived by layman terminology. The average quality score as per modified DISCERN index, GQS and VIQI were 3.03, 3.1 and 11.08 respectively. As per ESE statement, the average accuracy of the ‘pulpotomy’ and ‘pulp capping’ videos were 44.64% and 25.87% respectively. Mean accuracy as per AAE statement was 23.25%. A positive correlation of accuracy was established with all the derived metrics (p<0.05). Conclusion: The overall quality and accuracy of the selected videos was subpar. As YouTubeTM represents an important source of information about different health topics, reliable informative videos should be uploaded by specialized dental professionals.
