A survey dataset of residential heating systems and private vehicle adoption: Cross-country case study of Croatia, Finland, and the United Kingdom
Description
This dataset explores drivers and barriers to household-level uptake of low-carbon technologies across multiple sectors and countries. A multi-sectoral, transnational dataset is essential for uncovering cross-domain interactions in decision-making and capturing the behavioral nuances of energy transitions, advancing beyond traditional single-country studies. The dataset surveys 3,011 households in Croatia, Finland, and the UK, quantifying the economic, non-economic, and psychological factors affecting residential heating and personal vehicle adoption. Data was gathered between March and July 2018 via online surveys administered by professional firms. The questionnaires were localized, adjusting for nationally relevant technologies. The core dimensions include socio-economic information, usage, ownership, habits, and perceptions regarding the heating and transport technologies, and psychological factors. Additionally, the dataset includes two discrete choice experiments where respondents selected hypothetical heating systems and cars based on attributes like purchase price, running costs, convenience, and emissions. Researchers and policymakers can use this data to construct discrete choice models for both residential and transport sectors. Capturing non-monetary and psychological factors allows for more accurate parametrization of energy system models. Collected in 2018, the data serves as a vital pre-transition baseline, documenting structural household preferences before the dual disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 European energy crisis, enabling longitudinal analyses of consumer behavior evolution. The dataset was developed under the Horizon 2020 funded project REEEM [grant agreement 691739], with UCL leading the activity.
