Replication Data for: Bilateral Trade Dependency, Product Space, and Structural Lock-in: A Nash Bargaining Approach with Evidence from India
Description
This dataset contains the analytical replication files for the paper "Bilateral Trade Dependency, Product Space, and Structural Lock-in: A Nash Bargaining Approach with Evidence from India" submitted to The World Economy. The package includes nine derived CSV datasets, one R replication script (816 lines), and one codebook document. Raw source data are available from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), Government of India, Trade Statistics portal. The derived datasets cover bilateral trade asymmetry indices (VAI, POI), partner typology classifications, Markov transition analysis, and structural break results for 246 partner countries over the period January 2015 to July 2025.

Steps to reproduce
Steps to Reproduce This replication package reproduces all tables and figures in "Bilateral Trade Dependency, Product Space, and Structural Lock-in: A Nash Bargaining Approach with Evidence from India" (submitted to The World Economy). Software: R version 4.3 or higher. Required packages: readr, dplyr, tidyr, lubridate, ggplot2, igraph, tidygraph, ggraph, ggrepel, strucchange, cluster, factoextra, writexl, broom, stringr. All available on CRAN. Random seed: set.seed(42). Hardware: Minimum 8 GB RAM; 16 GB recommended. Estimated run time: 45 to 90 minutes (dominated by Product Overlap Index computation across 20 million records). Step 1 — Obtain raw source data (optional): Download 14 regional CSV files (7 export, 7 import) from the DGCI&S Trade Statistics portal: https://tradestat.commerce.gov.in. Place all files in one folder. Set base_path in India_Trade_Analysis_Complete.R to that folder path. Step 2 — Alternative (recommended): Load the nine deposited CSV files directly into R without re-downloading raw data. Run the following: vai_df <- read.csv("vai_df.csv") overlap_df <- read.csv("overlap_df.csv") asymmetry_df <- read.csv("asymmetry_df.csv") cluster_result <- read.csv("cluster_result.csv") migration <- read.csv("migration_matrix.csv") persistence_rates <- read.csv("persistence_rates.csv") shock_response <- read.csv("shock_response.csv") export_hhi_country <- read.csv("export_hhi.csv") import_hhi_country <- read.csv("import_hhi.csv") Then run Sections 4 to 11 of India_Trade_Analysis_Complete.R to reproduce all main results. Step 3 — Run full script: To reproduce from raw data, run: source("India_Trade_Analysis_Complete.R"). The script runs Sections 0 to 11 sequentially and saves all outputs automatically. Step 4 — Verify key outputs: China VAI 2024 = 0.826 (vai_df.csv). Russia 2024 net asymmetry = 666.7 (shock_response.csv). Structural Dependency persistence rate = 67.1% (persistence_rates.csv). Export HHI 2025 = 0.070 (export_hhi.csv). Step 5 — Generate figures: Figures are saved as PNG files to the home directory by the R script. Insert into Supplementary_Material.docx at indicated positions. Full instructions: See Steps_to_Reproduce.docx and Replication_Codebook.docx deposited with this package.
