This dataset contains 360 major social media censorship incidents from 2006 to 2023 across 76 countries. Each incident includes the country of censorship, the censoring year, the country's political system, the platforms censored, and reasons for censorship. The censored platforms included in this dataset are Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Telegram, Twitter, and Reddit. With pre-determined keywords, we searched the internet for pertinent data on censorship incidents, including scouring news sites (e.g., The New York Times), blogs (Google Blogoscoped), reports (e.g., Freedom House), Wikis for mentions, listings, and descriptions of censorship incidents, and internet monitoring watchdogs like Netblocks.
