Our study investigates the delivery of aerosolized antibiotics during mechanical ventilation. Specifically, we developed a novel breath-enhanced, breath-actuated nebulizer and an antibiotic formulation of two drugs. We tested this system by radiolabeling the formulation and doing a mass balance on the mechanical ventilator circuit to confirm delivery over a wide range of ventilator settings. Our findings define the factors that allow a caregiver to control aerosol delivery to the intubated patient. These data validate our devices and set the stage for future clinical trials.
