Developmental Changes in Upper Limb Muscle Synergies during Throwing: A Comparison between Preschoolers and Schoolers
Description
Dataset Overview This dataset provides comprehensive information on muscle synergies during throwing movements in 16 preschoolers (aged 3–5 years) and 9 school-aged children (aged up to 10 years). The study aims to explore developmental differences in motor control and upper limb muscle coordination. The dataset includes both participant characteristics and raw electromyographic (EMG) data collected during throwing tasks. Data Description The dataset consists of the following components: Participant Characteristics The file "Characteristics of preschoolers and schoolers.xlsx" contains demographic and performance data for all participants, including: Ages (years): Chronological age of each participant. Height (cm): Standing height in centimeters. Weight (kg): Body weight in kilograms. Gender: Gender of each participant (Male/Female). PEDI-FSS-SC1: Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory Functional Skills Scale (Self-Care, Part 1) score. Ball-Velocity (km/h): Ball speed measured at the moment of release. Ball-accuracy (m): Deviation of the ball's arrival position from the target center. Data is labeled as Preschooler1–16 and Schooler1–9, enabling group-wise comparisons. Throwing EMG Data Raw EMG data collected during the throwing tasks are included for each participant. The dataset includes analog EMG signals recorded at 2000 Hz from 16 upper limb muscles during the throwing task. Each participant completed a median of 10 trials (range: 5–19). EMG data are stored in a matrix format, where rows represent time points and columns correspond to muscle channels in the following order: IF: Infraspinatus SSP: Supraspinatus LT: Lower Trapezius MT: Middle Trapezius UT: Upper Trapezius DA: Anterior Deltoid DM: Middle Deltoid DP: Posterior Deltoid SA: Serratus Anterior PC: Pectoralis BCI: Long Head of the Biceps TLo: Long Head of the Triceps BR: Brachioradialis FCU: Flexor Carpi Ulnaris ECR: Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus LD: Latissimus Dorsi
