Description

This dataset contains plant carbon-isotope observations used to evaluate environmental responses of angiosperms and gymnosperms at regional and global scales. It includes 3,915 field observations from mainland China and 8,725 external global records. The dataset contains taxonomic information, geographic coordinates, plant carbon-isotope composition, carbon-isotope discrimination, atmospheric CO₂ information, and harmonized climatic variables. Mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) were harmonized using WorldClim v2.1. The workbook also includes a data dictionary, documented data corrections, and notes on climate-data extraction.

Steps to reproduce

The workbook contains separate sheets for the China field dataset and the external global synthesis records. Records were screened to retain C₃ plants with usable taxonomic, geographic, isotopic, and environmental information. Mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) were harmonized using WorldClim v2.1 BIO1 and BIO12, respectively. Atmospheric CO₂ and atmospheric carbon-isotope information were assigned according to record year where applicable. For the analyses described in the associated manuscript, observations were aggregated by sampling site and plant lineage, with angiosperm and gymnosperm records treated separately. The China field data were analysed regionally, while the global synthesis combined the China field observations with the external global records. Further details on variables and data processing are provided in the Data Dictionary, Data Corrections, and Climate Extraction Notes sheets.
