Development and Validation of Functionality Awareness and Attitudes Measure
Description
This dataset contains de-identified survey data used to develop and validate the Functionality Awareness and Attitudes Measure (FAAM), a multidimensional measure of functional body image. The study was guided by the hypothesis that body functionality is not a unidimensional construct and that individuals’ relationships with their bodies can be meaningfully differentiated across both functional domains (movement, creativity, and sensation) and psychological processes (awareness, appreciation, and positive attitudes). We further hypothesized that the FAAM would demonstrate a hierarchical factor structure, strong internal consistency, and expected patterns of convergent, discriminant, and criterion-related validity. Data were collected online through Qualtrics from undergraduate psychology students who participated for course credit. After exclusions for failed attention checks, duplicate responses, and substantial missingness, the final analytic sample included 255 participants. The dataset includes FAAM item responses and/or derived scale scores, demographic variables, and validation measures assessing related constructs such as functionality appreciation, body appreciation, embodiment, body awareness and dissociation, self-esteem, connectedness to nature, and objectified body consciousness. Findings supported a multidimensional, hierarchical FAAM structure across movement, creativity, and sensation, with distinguishable dimensions of awareness, appreciation, and positive attitudes. The FAAM showed strong reliability and expected associations with related constructs, supporting its use as a psychometrically sound measure of functional body image. Movement and sensation showed stronger relations with existing body image and embodiment measures, whereas creativity emerged as a meaningful but somewhat distinct domain. These data can be used to examine the structure of functional body image, replicate or extend psychometric analyses, compare FAAM scores with related validation measures, and support future research on embodiment and positive body image.
