Ideological and Political Education Supporting Emotional Well-Being and Mental Health in University Student Populations
Description
The mental health issues of students at universities have risen to the fore as a result of the pressures they encounter in their academic, social, and personal lives. However, the role of Ideological and Political Education (IPE) in facilitating the mental well-being of students needs more attention. Therefore, a combination of both quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted to investigate the association between IPE and emotional well-being of university students. Quantitative data were collected through the use of a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS, AMOS, and SmartPLS. Qualitative data from 12 semi-structured interviews were organized and coded using NVivo and analyzed thematically, with word-cloud and keyword co-occurrence visualizations used to illustrate prominent concepts and their relationships. The findings revealed that IPE is significantly and positively associated with Psychological Well-being (β = 0.208, p < 0.001), Positive Attitudes and Values (β = 0.375, p < 0.001), Sense of Purpose and Identity (β = 0.305, p < 0.001), and Emotional Stability (β = 0.164, p < 0.001), while the Prevalence of Mental Health Issues (β = −0.192, p < 0.001) showed a significant negative association. Furthermore, no significant moderation was observed for the Field of Study in any of the above-mentioned relations. The themes emerging from the qualitative data included resilience, social responsibility, emotion regulation, optimism, and identity development. It offers empirical evidence that IPE is positively contributing to students' psychological development and provides important implications for fostering students' overall well-being in higher education.
