Dataset Online Gambling Indonesia
Description
This dataset contains raw responses collected for the development and validation of a new psychometric instrument named TOMCAT (Tom's Online Gambling Compulsive Addiction Test). The study aims to measure problematic online gambling behaviors among the Indonesian adult population. 1. Data Collection Methodology: Data collection was conducted in two phases to overcome challenges related to the sensitive nature of the topic: a. Phase 1 (Online): Conducted via Google Forms (January 14–18, 2025). This phase yielded limited responses (n=22) due to the high social stigma associated with gambling in Indonesia. b. Phase 2 (Offline): To ensure sample adequacy, the distribution was shifted to offline methods until February 25, 2025. c. Final Sample: The total raw respondents were 318. After data curation and cleaning using Winsteps (Rasch Model analysis) to detect misfit responses, 236 participants were retained for the final analysis. 2. Participant Characteristics: a. Criteria: Indonesian adults (18+ years old) who have engaged in online gambling within the last 12 months. b. Demographics: Age range 18–53 years (Mean = 26.34; SD = 7.33). 3. Variables and Coding Information: The dataset includes the following variables. Please note that while "Sex" is numerically coded, other demographic variables are presented in their raw categorical or numerical format. a. TOMCAT Items: Responses to the instrument using a 7-point rating scale: 1 = Never, 2 = Rarely, 3 = Occasionally, 4 = Sometimes, 5 = Often, 6 = Very often, 7 = Every day. b. Age: Numerical value (years). c. Sex: Coded as 1 = Male, 2 = Female. d. Monthly Income: Categorical (in Rupiah). e. Last Level of Education: (Elementary, Junior High, Senior High, Diploma/Bachelor, Master/PhD). f. Marital Status: (Single, Married, Divorced, Widowed). Gambling History & Behavior: a. Game Types: Name of online gambling games played. (Descriptive) b. Spending: The largest amount ever spent on gambling (in Rupiah). c. Superstitious/Religious Behavior: "Have you ever prayed to God to win a gambling game?" (Yes/No). d. Addiction Perception: "Are you currently still having trouble stopping playing gambling games?" (Yes/No) e. Duration: Average time spent playing per day (Total Hours). Ethical Statement: All participants provided informed consent. Personal identifiers (names, contacts) have been removed to ensure strict anonymity, adhering to the ethical standards for research involving human subjects, especially concerning sensitive behaviors.

The data collection was conducted using a mixed-method approach, starting with an online survey via Google Forms (January 14–18, 2025). Due to the sensitive nature of the topic and associated social stigma, which resulted in limited online participation, the distribution strategy shifted to direct offline recruitment until February 25, 2025, yielding a total of 318 raw responses. The dataset subsequently underwent psychometric curation using Winsteps (Rasch Model analysis) to identify and remove misfit responses, resulting in a final sample of 236 valid participants. For analysis purposes, the demographic variable 'Sex' is coded numerically (1 = Male, 2 = Female), while responses to the TOMCAT instrument utilize a 7-point frequency scale ranging from 1 (Never) to 7 (Every day). All personal identifiers have been removed from this dataset to ensure strict participant anonymity.
