DentalOPG-1550: A Panoramic Dental X-Ray Image Dataset for Dental Disease Research

DentalOPG-1550 consists of 1,550 panoramic dental X-ray images which have been compiled as a research resource for use in studies concerning dental image analysis, computer vision, and artificial intelligence; the images were obtained from ordinary clinical diagnostic cases and reflect the kind of variations that one would encounter in real-world panoramic dental radiography. The dataset includes panoramic dental radiographs that show a variety of dental conditions and treatment-related findings such as BDR, bridge, cap, caries, distoangular impaction, filling, horizontal impaction, missing teeth, mixed dentition, normal teeth, periodontitis, root canal treatment, unerupted wisdom teeth, and apical abscess; a single panoramic radiograph can have more than one dental condition or finding at the same time. The images were obtained directly from the computer system of a diagnostic centre and were kept following the exclusion of those with insufficient clarity. Since the images come from actual clinical cases, the dataset includes natural variations in image brightness, contrast, sharpness, patient positioning, anatomical overlap, the way dental structures appear, and the degree of disease severity. It is precisely because of these features that the dataset is appropriate for the development and evaluation of robust computational methods under realistic imaging conditions. DentalOPG-1550 is meant to be used for research in areas including dental disease classification, object detection, image segmentation, computer-aided diagnosis, deep learning, medical image analysis, and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI).
