PM2.5 levels on the Schoonover Center Green Roof 2019-2024
Description
These data on PM2.5 concentrations, temperature, and relative humidity were collected using two PurpleAir sensors positioned to measure incoming air and air over the Schoonover Center green roof. Data were collected at both locations before the green roof was installed (October 2019–July 2020) and after vegetation was established (beginning August 1, 2020). The repository includes all daily data collected from October 8, 2019, through September 3, 2024. Measurements were recorded every wo minutes throughout each day. PM2.5 concentrations were measured independently by two laser particle counters within each PurpleAir monitor (labeled a and b in the dataset). Data that did not meet quality-control standards were removed, including days when the mean daily readings from the two laser particle counters within a monitor differed beyond an acceptable threshold (a–b). We also excluded data collected after July 6, 2024, when the west monitor failed. For our analyses, we calculated daily mean values for each location and applied a log transformation to the PM2.5 data. We tested whether establishment of the green roof resulted in lower PM2.5 concentrations over the green roof compared with incoming air from the west. We also used regression and mixed-effects models to examine how temperature, relative humidity, and season influenced PM2.5 concentrations at the two locations before and after green roof establishment. The complete raw dataset is also publicly available through PurpleAir.
