Description

Raw values of a near-infrared (NIR) compositional and fermentation-quality analysis of three air-dried lignocellulosic crop residues (corn stover, rice straw and sugarcane bagasse) before and after 21 d of anaerobic yellow silage with a six-strain composite inoculant (Bacillus sp. LB3, Bacillus velezensis LB4, Saccharomyces cerevisiae LJJM01/LJJM05, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei W33, Lentilactobacillus buchneri R5-7; CGMCC 32372-32377). Each substrate comprises one uninoculated control sample and three independent fermentation replicates. The dataset contains the measured values (protein fractions, fibre fractions, fermentation products, non-fibre carbohydrates, fat, ash, minerals, digestibility parameters and pH) together with the twelve original laboratory reports issued by Wulanchabu Yima Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Technology Co., Ltd. (Dairy One affiliate network). Moisture and dry matter are reported on an as-sampled basis and all other items on a dry-matter basis.

1. Substrates Air-dried corn stover (Zea mays) and rice straw (Oryza sativa) were obtained from local farmers in Xichang, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan, China. Sugarcane bagasse was obtained from a sugar mill in Ningnan, Liangshan. All substrates were chopped to 1-2 cm before use. 2.Inoculant. A six-strain composite inoculant was prepared from Bacillus sp. LB3 and Bacillus velezensis LB4, Saccharomyces cerevisiae LJJM01 and LJJM05, and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei W33 and Lentilactobacillus buchneri R5-7 (deposited at the China General Microbiological Culture Collection Center, CGMCC 32372-32377). Each strain was cultured separately in its own medium and adjusted to OD600 = 1.0; the six cultures were mixed in equal volumes immediately before use. 3. Fermentation The composite inoculant was mixed with each substrate at a substrate-to-inoculant ratio of 6:4 (v/v). Sterile water was added to adjust the moisture content to 60% (corn stover and rice straw) or 62% (sugarcane bagasse); the target was checked by hand squeezing (the material forms a ball without free water droplets). The mixture was packed into one-way-valve polyethylene bags, the air was expelled, the bags were sealed, and the material was fermented anaerobically at room temperature in the dark for 21 days (March 2024). 4. Controls and design Uninoculated substrate receiving the same amount of sterile water served as the control for each substrate. Six groups were set up: corn-stover control (CCG) and fermented (CFG), rice-straw control (RCG) and fermented (RFG), and sugarcane-bagasse control (BCG) and fermented (BFG). Each group had five replicate bags; three replicate bags per group were submitted for analysis. Each control was submitted as one single mixed sample, so the controls are n = 1 and the fermented groups are n = 3. 5. Sampling and analysis Samples were submitted to Wulanchabu Yima Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Technology Co., Ltd. (a member of the global Dairy One affiliate laboratory network) and analysed on a FOSS 2500 near-infrared spectrometer against the Dairy One database; the reports are dated 15 May 2024 (sample numbers 20240514175-20240514186). Moisture and dry matter are reported on an as-sampled basis; all other items are on a dry-matter basis, exactly as printed in the reports. Fermentation-quality items (pH, lactic, acetic and butyric acid, VFA score) were measured on the fermented samples only, not on the unfermented controls. 6. Data handling Values in 01_Raw_data_yellow_silage_straws.xlsx were transcribed exactly as printed in the reports, without any conversion. The three fermented samples per substrate are three independent replicate bags, labelled R1-R3 here regardless of the circled numbers used in the original working files. A second, derived and normalised block present in the authors' working spreadsheet (decimal fractions) was excluded from this dataset.
