Description

This dataset supports the manuscript “Eco-efficiency and circular economy: Historical trajectories, contemporary configurations, and implications for sustainable development.” It contains the bibliographic databases and analytical materials developed for two complementary systematic literature reviews (SLRs), content analysis, and thematic historical analysis. SLR1 reconstructs the historical and conceptual development of eco-efficiency (EE). It includes 101 publications covering the period 1987–2015. Records were identified through Scopus and Web of Science searches, complemented by backward citation searching. The corpus includes database-indexed articles, reviews, and conference papers, as well as relevant books, institutional reports, and standards identified through backward citation tracking. SLR2 examines the explicit relationship between eco-efficiency and circular economy (CE). It includes 98 peer-reviewed journal articles and reviews published in English or Spanish. Records were identified through Scopus and Web of Science searches, complemented by backward citation searching, from database inception through December 2024, including relevant articles available online early in 2025. The dataset includes bibliographic records, screening and inclusion information, and analytical coding materials used to examine the historical development of EE and the contemporary configurations of the EE–CE relationship. The coding framework considers the roles assigned to EE and CE as an approach, strategy, implementation tool, measurement tool, goal, and outcome, as well as integrative, complementary, and critical EE–CE configurations. No full-text publications are included. The dataset is provided to support transparency, verification, and future research on eco-efficiency, circular economy, and sustainable development. Users should cite this dataset and the associated article, once published, when using these materials.
