Andalusian Athletes' Sun Habits and Knowledge: Survey-Based Dataset (2021-2024)

"This dataset contains information on sun exposure habits, sun protection practices, knowledge, and attitudes related to sun exposure among Andalusian athletes. The data were collected through the validated CHACES questionnaire, administered online to athletes undergoing a sports medical check-up at the ASMC between June 8, 2021, and June 7, 2024. The dataset includes demographic characteristics, skin type, sunburn history, and sun safety behaviors. It provides valuable insights into sun-related health risks and prevention strategies in the athletic population."

Steps to reproduce

The validated CHACES questionnaire was used to study habits, attitudes and knowledge of sun exposure in the young adult population. The questionnaire was completed online using the SurveyMonkey platform prior to the sports medical check-up at the ASMC. The questionnaire is composed of 42 items grouped into the following sections: 1) demographic characteristics (12 items), 2) skin colour (1 item), 3) skin phototype (1 item), 4) sun exposure habits (6 items), 5) sunburn in the last year (1 item), 6) sun protection practices (9 items), 7) attitudes towards sun exposure (10 items), 8) knowledge related to the sun and SC (10 items). The validity of this instrument was demonstrated in the first phase of the analysis by the Cronbach α values obtained, ranging from 0.45 to 0.8 for all components except knowledge (0.335). In the second phase, test-retest reliability was demonstrated (absolute agreement >60%). This questionnaire was developed and validated by our research team, and used in previous studies in athletes.
