Data and code for temporal trends, co-mentioned conditions, and disparities in US death certificates mentioning dorsopathies, 1999–2024
Description
This dataset contains the final data and analysis files supporting a national repeated cross-sectional study of US death certificates mentioning dorsopathies (ICD-10 M40–M54) among adults aged 45 years or older from 1999 to 2024. Source data were obtained from the publicly available CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death database. Longitudinal analyses combined the 1999–2020 Bridged Race database for 1999–2017 with the 2018–2024 Single Race database for 2018–2024. The overlapping years 2018–2020 were validated before database harmonisation. The repository includes the final CDC WONDER data exports, analysis-ready datasets, data-processing code, NCI Joinpoint Regression Program input files, official Weighted Bayesian Information Criterion (WBIC) Joinpoint outputs, Monte Carlo permutation-test sensitivity-analysis outputs, narrow-definition sensitivity analyses, and final figure files. The primary study definition was any mention of dorsopathies (M40–M54) on the death certificate. Prespecified co-mentioned conditions included falls (W00–W19), pneumonia, ischemic heart diseases (I20–I25), cerebrovascular diseases (I60–I69), chronic lower respiratory diseases (J40–J47), and pulmonary embolism (I26). The repository also contains analyses stratified by age, sex, race and ethnicity, state, urbanisation category, and underlying cause of death. Temporal trends were analysed using NCI Joinpoint Regression Program version 6.1.0. The primary model used Weighted BIC for model selection, and a Monte Carlo permutation test was used as a sensitivity analysis. A narrower dorsopathy definition comprising M47, M48.0, M48.1, M48.2, M50, and M51 was also evaluated. All files contain aggregate, de-identified, publicly available mortality data. CDC WONDER suppressed counts were not reconstructed or imputed. No individual-level participant data are included.
