Ecological Data (Invertebrates and Fish) Shasta River
Description
Suite of data on biofilms, instream invertebrates, and fish data collected in 2021. Instream water column drift net samples collected drifting terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, and Surber samples collected aquatic invertebrates in benthos. Invertebrates collected over spring and summer months. Fish data includes both population data and isotopes from tissue samples. Data used for dissertation chapter manuscript by Tara McKinnon at University of Nevada, Reno.

Steps to reproduce
We collected drift invertebrates and benthic macro-invertebrates (BMI) following methods from Rhoades et al. 2024. Invertebrates were identified to Family whenever possible, body length was recorded and used to find dry weight (biomass) using published regressions (Baumgärtner and Rothhaupt 2003; Benke et al. 1999; Ganihar 1997; Hódar 1997; Kaeriyama and Ikeda 2002; Méthot et al. 2012; Miserendino 2001; Poepperl 1998; Rogers, Buschbom, and Watson 1977; Rosati, Barbone, and Basset 2012; Sabo 2002; Rahkola, Karjalainen, and Avinsky 1998). Biofilms on rocks we collected as a subsample from 6 rocks at each site by scrubbing and rinsing a 3.0 cm diameter circle and then collection liquid was processed in the same way as Rhoades et al. (2024). Velocity, width, depth, and length data was take for riffle hydrologic units sampled. Fish population and tissue samples were acquired from multi-pass electro-fishing surveys, sampling in a net-enclosed area (Permit CDFW: S-200800001-20080-001). Fish sampling area, depth, and time was recorded for standardizing samples. Fish tissue samples were sent to UC Davis Stable Isotope Facility for bulk C and N and as well as for compound specific amino acids. All data collected on Shasta River, California at locations above (upstream) and below (downstream) from a major water diversion.
