Description

This replication dataset accompanies the manuscript “Matching Carbon Pricing to Development: Emissions Trading, Carbon Taxes, and Industrial Process Decarbonization.” The dataset contains an unbalanced panel of 190 economies covering the period 1990–2024. The main outcome variable is industrial process CO₂ emissions per capita. The key policy variables identify the implementation of emissions trading systems (ETS) and carbon taxes. The dataset also includes variables capturing electricity access, fossil-energy consumption, gross fixed capital formation, GDP per capita, and treatment timing for the dynamic treatment-effect analysis. The replication files are provided to facilitate transparency and reproducibility of the empirical analysis. The accompanying code reproduces the main analyses reported in the manuscript, including baseline fixed-effects estimates, nonlinear development–emissions specifications, joint ETS and carbon-tax models, placebo tests, development-stage heterogeneity analyses, and group-time average treatment effects (ATTGT).

Files

Steps to reproduce

Replication instructions Download all files and save them in the same project folder while retaining the original file names and folder structure, if applicable. Open the main replication code file in Stata. Modify the working-directory path at the beginning of the code so that it points to the folder containing the downloaded replication files. Run the code sequentially from beginning to end. The code reproduces the baseline estimates, nonlinear development specifications, joint policy estimates, placebo exercises, development-stage heterogeneity results, and dynamic ATTGT estimates reported in the manuscript. Some user-written Stata packages may be required for the dynamic DID/ATTGT analysis. If these packages are not already installed, users should install the required packages before running the corresponding sections of the code. Data sources Industrial process CO₂ emissions and macroeconomic control variables are obtained from the World Bank. Information on the implementation and timing of emissions trading systems and carbon taxes is compiled from the World Bank carbon-pricing database. The processed replication dataset contains the variables used in the empirical analysis. Software The empirical analysis was conducted in Stata. Users are advised to run the replication code using a recent version of Stata and the required user-written packages. Citation Users of these replication materials should cite both the associated article and this dataset. The bibliographic information for the article can be updated after publication. Notes The replication files are intended to reproduce the empirical results reported in the associated manuscript. Differences in software versions or updates to user-written Stata packages may result in minor differences in numerical output or graphical formatting.
