Description

This descriptive, cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of enamel development defects among patients attending the Dr René Puig Bentz clinic at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University. The study was prompted by the scarcity of research on this topic in the Dominican Republic, underscoring the importance of determining its prevalence to enhance early diagnosis and optimise dental prevention and treatment. Information was initially collected by administering a questionnaire containing general questions about medical history and relevant diseases. A clinical evaluation was then performed to determine the presence or absence of EDDs, and the presence of caries in the affected teeth was also recorded to enable proper differentiation. Finally, intraoral photographs were taken to accurately document the condition of the dentition. The results showed a high prevalence of enamel development defects. This finding confirms that EDDs are a common structural alteration within the study population, reflecting notable quantitative and qualitative changes to dental enamel in a university clinical context.

Data collection began with the administration of a structured questionnaire, preceded by a clear explanation of the study's objectives and scope. The informed consent form was then provided and explained in detail, including the purpose of the intervention. The participants' voluntary approval was then obtained. Once consent had been formalised, the corresponding clinical evaluation was performed and the parameters established in the registration form were completed. Intraoral photographs were then taken for documentation and to support the findings clinically. Once the required number of participants had been reached, the information collected was entered into a Microsoft Excel database, where the relevant variables were recorded. A professional specialising in statistics then carried out statistical processing and analysis, generating the percentages and preparing representative tables describing the most relevant parameters. These tables formed the basis for interpreting the study results.
