Tracey DowdeswellDescription
This data looks at cases of wrongful convictions from the National Registry of Exonerations, current as of December 31, 2025, and focuses on cases in which DNA is indicated as having contributed to the exoneration. We collected data on whether the true perpetrator of the offence has been identified, the year of the identification, the biological source of the DNA sample(s) where known, and whether the method of identification involved a search of a CODIS law enforcement database, direct comparison with the DNA of a known suspect, or investigative genetic genealogy (IGG). Tommi Leigh, Taryn Mulvihill, CeCe Moore, and David Gurney contributed to this research project.
