Description

Description This dataset was generated from a randomized controlled trial conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the Buteyko Breathing Technique (BBT) on cardiorespiratory fitness and selected physiological parameters among recreational athletes. The study aimed to determine whether adding BBT to a structured functional training programme would improve cardiorespiratory performance and physiological outcomes compared with functional training alone. A total of 52 recreational athletes aged between 20 and 28 years participated in the study. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups: an experimental group (n = 26), which received Buteyko Breathing Technique in addition to functional training, and a control group (n = 26), which received functional training only. The intervention lasted 6 weeks, with supervised exercise sessions conducted six days per week. The dataset contains anonymized participant-level data, including demographic variables (age, sex, height, weight, and body mass index) and physiological outcome measures collected at baseline and after completion of the intervention. The primary outcome was cardiorespiratory fitness, assessed using the Queen's College Step Test and expressed as VO₂max (mL·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹). Secondary outcome measures included resting heart rate (RHR), resting systolic blood pressure (SBP), and resting diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The dataset also includes calculated change scores (post-intervention minus pre-intervention) for all outcome variables. The data are suitable for descriptive statistical analysis, normality testing, within-group and between-group comparisons, effect size estimation, and replication of the study findings. Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics Version 26. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were selected based on the distribution of the data. All participant information has been fully anonymized to protect confidentiality. The dataset is intended to support transparency, reproducibility, secondary analyses, and future research in physiotherapy, exercise science, sports medicine, and cardiorespiratory rehabilitation.
