Description

This dataset contains household-level survey data from 400 farm households across five hill districts of the Garhwal division, Uttarakhand, India (Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi), collected in 2024. The survey examines women's authority over farm decisions in households where adult men have out-migrated for work, with a focus on finger millet (mandua) and barnyard millet (jhangora). One row is one household; the respondent is the woman who manages the farm day to day. The 136 variables cover household structure, migration, phone contact with migrants, land and farm characteristics, labour participation, decision authority across land, crop, investment and financial domains, phone-routing of decisions, autonomy to act, institutional access, and self-assessment. The workbook includes a README, a full codebook, response-code definitions, the data sheet, and the village sampling frame. Ethics and de-identification: informed consent is recorded for every household. The data contain no direct identifiers (no names, phone numbers, or ID numbers). To protect a vulnerable respondent group, village names are replaced by codes (V01-V40), interview dates are reduced to month-year, and enumerator initials are replaced by codes; district, block and altitude band are retained. See the DEIDENTIFICATION_NOTE sheet for details. A linked qualitative interview log is held in restricted access and is not part of this deposit.
