Description

This dataset supports the stratigraphic, sedimentological and cosmogenic nuclide geochronological study of the sandy-gravelly deposits of fan deltaic origin, which were deposited during ca. 11.6-9.4 Ma in the eastern margin of the Danube Basin, which is the northernmost depocenter of the Pannonian Basin System (Central Europe). The study was focused on verification of the stratigraphic position of this formation, of the depositional processes and duration of the deposition. The dataset includes a detailed description of laboratory sample processing for the authigenic 10Be/9Be dating, which allows the reproducibility of the analyzes. Furthermore, the dataset contains a list of archival boreholes used for correlation in geological sections, including the information necessary to access the original manuscripts in a digital archive. The analyzed outcrops are characterized in this dataset by digital elevation model maps using Lidar data. A generalized log of facies distribution is provided for the Nemčiňany site, together with a sedimentological scheme and a photopanel showing sampling points for dating. The sedimentological and paleogeographic interpretations are included in the related paper Šujan et al. (2023) Geologica Carpathica, https://doi.org/10.31577/GeolCarp.2023.25

Steps to reproduce

In order to reproduce the stratigraphic correlations, the manuscripts including original borehole lithological profiles could be found in the Geofond digital archive of the State Geological Institute of Dionýz Štúr, at the page https://da.geology.sk/navigator/?desktop=Public Setting up an account is necessary for access. The Lidar digital elevation model used for the preparation of detailed maps of the Tajná and Nemčiňany outcrops is freely accessible at: https://zbgis.skgeodesy.sk/mkzbgis/sk/teren The sedimentological data were gained by field investigation of the Tajná (48.2576°N, 18.3811°E) and Nemčiňany (48.3046°N, 18.4551°E) outcrops. The facies analysis was performed according to (Stow 2005) considering up-to-date sedimentological knowledge for upper-flow regime bedforms provided by Cartigny et al. (2014), Postma and Cartigny (2014) and Slootman et al. (2021). Orientation of 61 foreset beds was measured using a geological compass at the Nemčiňany site. The detailed methodology to reproduce the authigenic 10Be/9Be dating results is included in the dataset file "Detailed sample processing for authigenic 10Be-9Be dating.docx". The ages included in this dataset are reproduced from Šujan et al. (2016).
