Description

This dataset contains survey responses from 303 university students in Dhaka City, Bangladesh, examining how socio-demographic and lifestyle factors relate to awareness and practice of Green Computing (sustainable IT). Respondents were drawn from 27 institutions (e.g., BUET, Dhaka University, NSU, BRAC University, AIUB, MIST, and others), across engineering and non-engineering ("Others") fields of study. Sample distribution is concentrated at East West University (n=178), with the remaining respondents distributed across 28 other institutions. The survey (27 variables) captures four broad dimensions: Demographics—gender, field of study, year of study, university name Device usage & performance habits—daily screen time, device performance category, battery/charging behavior, overheating, high-performance mode usage, background app/software usage Institutional exposure—curriculum inclusion of Green Computing topics, faculty encouragement, campus awareness initiatives Awareness & sustainable practices—familiarity with green computing/ Sustainable IT concepts, e-waste awareness, carbon footprint awareness (cloud storage/email), and energy-saving behaviors (Dark Mode, brightness reduction, device repair vs. replacement) Most attitudinal/behavioral items are recorded on a 5-point Likert scale (Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree). Data were collected through an online survey distributed via direct personal messaging on Facebook Messenger. Rather than posting the survey publicly, the researcher joined various Facebook groups related to university and college students in Dhaka City and individually contacted group members through personal messages, requesting them to fill out the survey. Respondents were selected using a convenience sampling approach participants were randomly approached from these groups without targeting any specific institution or demographic group in advance. Prior to participating, all respondents were presented with an informed consent form at the beginning of the online survey, outlining the study's purpose, voluntary nature, confidentiality, and absence of any known risks. Participants could only proceed to the survey questions after confirming that they understood the study and agreed to participate voluntarily. No personally identifying information was collected, and all responses were used solely for academic research purposes in aggregated form. An online questionnaire (Google Forms) was designed covering four sections: demographics, device usage and performance habits, institutional exposure to Green Computing, and awareness/sustainable practices, using a 5-point Likert scale for attitudinal items. The survey link was distributed to university and college students in Dhaka City via social media groups, class groups, and personal networks, following convenience/snowball sampling. Participants completed the survey voluntarily after reviewing the informed consent statement embedded at the start of the form. Data was collected between April 18 and August 28, 2026, and exported as a raw CSV file from Google Forms. The raw data was cleaned: incomplete or invalid responses were removed, one inconsistent Likert-scale entry was corrected, and university/institution name variants (e.g., spelling and abbreviation differences) were standardized. The cleaned dataset (n = 303, 27 variables) was finalized for analysis and uploaded here.
