Food System Policies: a Global Snapshot from the Food System Policy Database (FSPD)
Description
This dataset contains information on agrifood system policies and frameworks from the Food Systems Policy Database (FSPD). It includes approximately 11,900 policies and 3,700 frameworks, covering a wide geographical range of 192 countries and eight regional groups. This dataset is described in greater detail in the paper: Lowder, S.K., Ruggeri Laderchi, C., Cerutti, N., Parsons, K. (2025). Food System Policies: a Global Snapshot from the Food System Policy Database (FSPD). Global Food Security. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gfs.2025.100894 Key Variables: - Country: Identifies the country or regional group to which the policy applies. - Segment: Categorizes policies into 10 food system segments, including inputs, farming, transport and distribution, trade, processing and manufacturing, retail, food service, eating, multiple, natural resource management, and framework policies. - Lever: Describes the specific policy lever or framework, with approximately 135 different types of policies and 30 types of frameworks. - Type of lever: Classifies the policy instrument (e.g., information to consumers, subsidies, taxes, public goods, regulations, or trade measures). - Policy details: Provides a description of the policy or framework, including the governing body, nature of the decision, and sometimes the implementation year. - COVID: Indicates whether the policy was adopted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. - WB_region and Income_group: Classify countries based on World Bank income classifications for FY 2022. - FSD_group: Categorizes countries into five food system types based on specific indicators. - Envitarget, Inclusion, and Diethealth: Binary indicators for policies targeting environmental sustainability, poverty reduction, and dietary health improvement, respectively. Data Uses: This comprehensive dataset allows for analysis of agrifood system policies across different countries, regions, and food system segments. It can be used to study policy trends, compare approaches between countries or regions, and examine the focus of policies on key areas such as environmental sustainability, poverty reduction, and dietary health.
