Dataset for "Interactive English Learning Enjoyment: Instructional Needs of Indonesian Public Health Students"
Description
This dataset supports the study entitled "Interactive English Learning Enjoyment: Instructional Needs of Indonesian Public Health Students." The study was conducted to investigate: (1) the wants and lacks of public health students in learning English, and (2) how to design the instruction. The research was based on the absence of need analysis from the students' perspective. The dataset contains anonymized raw questionnaire responses, interview transcripts, qualitative coding file derived from interview data and students' work documentation, the questionnaire of need analysis and the interview question items. Questionnaire data provide information regarding students' perceptions of English learning and instructional expectations. Interview transcripts offer in-depth insights into students' perspectives, motivations, challenges, and suggestions for English learning. The coding file documents the analytical process used to identify categories and themes emerging from the qualitative data. Data were collected from 80 undergraduate public health students at an Indonesian university. Questionnaire responses were collected electronically, while interviews were conducted in Indonesian and transcribed. Students' work documentation produced during learning activities was also collected and analyzed to support data triangulation. Qualitative data were analyzed through thematic coding procedures to identify recurring patterns and themes. The dataset indicates that students generally value interactive, meaningful, and professionally relevant English learning experiences. The data also reveal diverse instructional needs related to classroom interaction, discipline-related learning materials, and performative communication tasks. The coding files demonstrate how these themes were derived from the qualitative data sources. This repository is intended to promote research transparency and facilitate secondary analysis. Researchers may use the dataset to explore instructional needs analysis in EFL context, especially in higher education settings. All personal identifiers have been removed to protect participant confidentiality.

Steps to reproduce
This dataset was generated as part of a mixed-methods study investigating instructional needs among Indonesian undergraduate Public Health students. Data were collected from students enrolled in a Public Health program at an Indonesian university. Quantitative data were obtained through a questionnaire designed to explore students' perspectives and their instructional needs in learning English for academic and professional purposes. Responses were collected electronically and exported into spreadsheet format. Qualitative data were obtained through structured interviews with selected participants. Interviews were conducted in Indonesian and audio-recorded with participants' consent. Recordings were subsequently transcribed to be included in this repository. To enhance the credibility of the findings, students' work documentation produced during English learning activities was also collected and analyzed. Interview transcripts and students' work documentation were subjected to qualitative thematic analysis. The analysis involved repeated reading of the data, identification of meaningful units, generation of initial codes, categorization of related codes, and development of broader themes representing students' experiences, perceptions, and instructional needs. The repository contains the anonymized raw questionnaire responses, interview transcripts, and coding files derived from both interview data and students' work documentation. All personally identifiable information has been removed to protect participant confidentiality.
