Sampling Information for Aerosol Samples Collected at Zhongshan Station
Description
This dataset provides multi-year observations of atmospheric trace metals at Zhongshan Station, a coastal research station in East Antarctica. The dataset comprises 247 aerosol samples collected from December 2020 to February 2025, with concentrations of 12 trace metals (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Cd, Ba, and Pb). The study was based on the premise that atmospheric trace-metal concentrations at the coastal Antarctic site would vary with season and year and would reflect the combined influence of natural sources, anthropogenic inputs, and atmospheric transport. The results show clear seasonal variability for most trace metals, with generally higher concentrations during the austral summer than during winter. Cu and Pb showed relatively weak seasonal variability, whereas Se, Zn, and Cd exhibited particularly pronounced seasonal differences. Interannual variations were also observed, including several high-concentration episodes during the observation period. These observations provide a multi-year record of atmospheric trace-metal concentrations at a coastal Antarctic research station and can be used to examine seasonal and interannual variability, compare trace-metal levels among Antarctic regions and observation periods, and investigate potential source characteristics and atmospheric transport pathways. The dataset may also provide a reference for evaluating temporal changes in Antarctic atmospheric trace-metal concentrations. When comparing these data with observations from other studies, differences in sampling periods, sampling locations, analytical methods, detection limits, and environmental conditions should be considered. The data should therefore be interpreted in the context of the sampling and analytical conditions reported for this dataset.
