A system meets a disturbance it cannot clear. It protects itself instead. The protection works, and the cost of the protection builds until the protection itself is the disease. The failing heart remodels. Wounded tissue fibroses. The frightened mind avoids. The grieving mind substitutes a bearable story for an unbearable fact. In every one of these the damage is not a breakdown of repair. It is the repair, carried on past the point where it helped. This paper states that pattern as a law and fixes the conditions under which it holds.
