Interactive trade-offs: A classic grounded theory study of how enterostomal therapists provide sexual health education for people with ostomies
Description
This study used classic grounded theory to generate a theory explaining how enterostomal therapists provide sexual health support to people with ostomies. Data analysis showed that the main concern of enterostomal therapists in practice was whether the sexual health support they provided was congruent with patients' needs. They addressed this concern through the core category of Interactive trade-offs and its categories: Perceiving, Weighing, Probing and Reorienting. Through ongoing interaction with patients, enterostomal therapists continuously adjusted their awareness of professional responsibility and their direction of action..

Data were collected through open-ended interviews that began with the grand tour question: "Please share with me how you provide sexual health education for people with an ostomy." Data collection and analysis were conducted concurrently. The analytical process included open coding, selective coding and theoretical coding. During this process, constant comparative analysis was used as the core analysis strategy, while writing memos, and continued until theoretical saturation was reached.
