Bird Strike on NACA 2412 Wing Section
Description
This dataset comprises the results of the numerical simulations conducted on a NACA 2412 wing section pertaining to Cessna 172 Skyhawk. The dataset comprises wing deformation, stress and strain time-histories, along with the energy variation during and after the impact event.

Steps to reproduce
1. Develop the Structural Geometry and Material Model - Create the wing-section geometry using the NACA 2412 airfoil profile representative of the Cessna 172 Skyhawk wing. - Define structural components such as skin panels, ribs, and spars. - Assign appropriate material properties for the aluminum alloy, including elastic-plastic behavior and failure parameters. 2. Create the Bird Projectile Model - Model the bird using a soft-body representation, typically through the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. - Define bird mass, density, and constitutive properties to capture fluid-like deformation and fragmentation during impact. - Specify the impact velocity and trajectory corresponding to the strike scenario. 3. Set Up the Explicit Dynamic Impact Analysis - Import the wing and bird models into ANSYS Explicit Dynamics. - Establish contact interactions between the SPH bird particles and wing structure. - Apply boundary conditions representing the wing support conditions and initialize the bird velocity. 4. Perform the Transient Bird-Strike Simulation - Run the explicit dynamic analysis over the impact duration. - Monitor key response parameters such as von Mises stress, plastic strain, deformation, displacement, and contact forces. - Track the temporal evolution of impact-induced damage, including leading-edge indentation and stress-wave propagation. 5. Post-Process and Validate the Results - Evaluate stress distributions, permanent deformation patterns, and energy absorption mechanisms. - Quantify the conversion of projectile kinetic energy into plastic work, internal energy, and residual kinetic energy. - Compare the predicted damage morphology with documented bird-strike incidents or experimental observations to assess the reliability of the numerical model.
