Correlation between body fat percentage and physiological cost index in noirmal Asian BMI range among developmental badminton players : a cross sectional study

Abstract Background: Badminton requires a high aerobic level, speed and efficiency of movement. Players ' fitness is typically evaluated using variables like body mass index (BMI), a value that includes the proportions of fat and lean tissue masses. So, this study was intended to investigate the degree of the body's fat percentage with that of the physiological cost index (PCI) among the novice developmental adolescent badminton players with the 'normal' asian BMI range. Methodology: The cross-sectional study comprising 29 developmental players (21 males and 8 females, age range=13-17 years) from Regional SAI Badminton Academy, Bhubaneswar. Their Anthropometric data, weight, height, & skinfold thickness to assess %body fat and PCI . The measurement of PCI was based on the ratio of the difference between resting heart rates & work heart rate for submaximal treadmill jogging and the working - resting workload. Normality of the distributed data was assessed using Shapiro- Wilk' test while Spearman’s Rank correlation tests were conducted to study the correlation between body fat% and the PCI Values. Results: There was a non- significant (P >0.05) very weak positive correlation (rS=0.179) between percent body fat and PCI. The values of percent body fat & PCI were 16.36 ± 4.69 (%) and 9.40 ±2.82 respectively while mean age=14.72 ±1.46 years, mean BMI = 19.89 ±1.66 kg/m2. Conclusion: The values of % body fat do not influence (at) high significant changes in energy cost & heart rate response during low intense walking. Hence more concentration must be devoted on training the agility, power, & foot- work of these young athletes for their better development not on just body weight alone.
