The Scale–Technology Paradox: Technological Progress and Productivity Decline in Nigerian Banking
Description
This replication package supports the study “The Scale–Technology Paradox: Technological Progress and Productivity Decline in Nigerian Banking.” It contains the complete R code, software requirements, table–figure crosswalk, validation programs, expected aggregate results, public contextual series, and a deterministic synthetic bank panel required to reproduce and assess the study’s empirical workflow. The analysis examines 17 Nigerian commercial banks over 2000–2023 using a multi-output input distance function estimated through a control-function GMM approach. The package reproduces the reported productivity change, technical change, returns to scale, input elasticities, robustness checks, and outlier analyses. The original bank-level panel is not included because the financial-report documents were accessed through Bloomberg Terminal under an institutional license and public redistribution rights have not been established. The package therefore documents two replication routes: authorized access through a licensed Bloomberg Terminal or independent reconstruction using the sampled banks’ publicly available annual reports and financial statements. A source inventory, variable definitions, and reconstruction templates are provided. The synthetic dataset preserves the structure of the analysis panel but contains no actual bank-level financial observations and must not be used to interpret or verify the published empirical estimates.
