Description

We identified 575 designated terrestrial protected areas under IUCN categories I-VI, covering a total area of 322,684 km², with different levels of national and local government jurisdiction. This represents approximately 11.6% of Argentina’s total land area. Notably, the World Database of PAs lists only 395 PAs for Argentina. Therefore, our database is significantly more comprehensive and could serve as a valuable resource for conservation assessments and planning.

Steps to reproduce

We compiled polygons representing the geographic location and extent of protected areas (PAs) in Argentina based on the World Database of PAs and OpenStreetMap. Our database underwent a thorough verification and cleaning process to address missing information, particularly regarding the establishment year of each PA. Each entry was carefully examined to ensure data completeness and enable accurate analysis. This process involved a systematic search and compilation of missing establishment years across all PAs. We then filtered PAs based on the IUCN PA management categories, including all six of them. Thirteen PAs lacked an IUCN category and were therefore excluded from the analysis.
