Description

This study assessed the contribution of classroom conditions on students' achievement in public secondary schools in Kamonyi District, Rwanda. Specifically, the study examined how classroom conditions influence students' academic achievement. A descriptive and correlational research design was employed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study targeted 152 respondents comprising 145 teachers, 6 head teachers, and 1 District Education Officer from selected public secondary schools in Kamonyi District. Universal sampling was adopted because of the manageable population size. Data were collected using questionnaires and interview guides and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that classroom conditions positively contribute to students' achievement. Respondents agreed that adequate classroom space, cleanliness, sufficient lighting, and availability of learning resources enhance students' academic performance, although inadequate classroom ventilation remained a challenge. Correlation analysis revealed a strong positive and statistically significant relationship between classroom conditions and students' achievement (r = 0.695, p < 0.001). Regression analysis further showed that classroom conditions significantly predict students' achievement and account for 48.3% of the variation in academic performance. The study concluded that classroom conditions are a significant determinant of students' achievement in public secondary schools. The study recommends that school administrators, the Ministry of Education, and other education stakeholders invest in improving classroom infrastructure, maintenance, and learning facilities to create conducive learning environments that enhance students' academic achievement.
