Description

This study examines annealing effects on additively manufactured carbon PLA components. It examined topography, coefficient of friction, wear rate, wear modes, and XRD analysis. Samples were fabricated using the Archimedean chord pattern with 100% infill and annealed at 70°C, 85°C, and 100°C, designated groups B, C, and D, with group A as the untreated control. Ra, Rsk, Rku, Rsm, and the bearing ratio were evaluated. Observed variations were minimal, likely due to nozzle wear. Sample pairs treated at 70°C had a lower coefficient of friction at all loads than the rest, while untreated samples showed the highest, as expected. However, this pair experienced a higher wear rate, followed by samples treated at 85°C, then 100°C. Notably, due to high ductility, the untreated pair experienced a lower average wear rate at 0.00155mm3/N.m. Across loads, failure modes were consistent; however, group A at 15N exhibited wedge formations due to increased ductility. XRD analysis revealed heat-treatment changes in crystalline structure, size, and microstrain direction.
