Description

This dataset contains the raw route data, VECTO simulation inputs, per-route simulation outputs, and aggregated result tables that support the manuscript "Impacts of Road Directness for Freight Transportation, a Multi-Country Comparison" submitted to Latin American Transportation Studies (Elsevier). It covers 62 highway corridors across 12 countries (Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, France, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru), all simulated with the European Commission's VECTO 3.3 tool using a single vehicle (Class 9 Rigid Truck 6x2, 18.6 t total mass with a 7.1 t payload) at a common reference maximum speed. For each corridor we provide the curated GPS profile (Route-*-final.csv), the VECTO driving file (.vdri), the VECTO modal output post-processed to CSV, and country-level metadata (main cities, altitude, population, population share). Aggregated result tables at the country and route level include road directness, cumulative elevation gain, travel time, fuel consumption, and the distance/time/fuel factors relative to a Rest-of-the-World baseline. Supplementary per-country figures not included in the paper are provided in the figuras_paises/ folder. A README.md at the root of the archive documents the file structure, column dictionaries, units (SI: metres, kilometres, seconds; fuel consumption reported in grams or in litres computed at 847 g/L diesel density), and the data-curation pipeline (Savitzky-Golay smoothing, peak-based slope filtering, OSM bridge/tunnel interpolation, downhill safety-speed cap, altitude-corrected equivalent slope). Steps to reproduce

1. GPS routes were extracted from Google Earth Pro as KML files (one per corridor) and converted to CSV with latitude, longitude, altitude and cumulative distance. 2. Each altitude profile was cleaned to remove artefacts at tunnels, viaducts and near steep hills (Savitzky-Golay smoothing, peak-based slope filtering, OSM bridge/tunnel interpolation). 3. The curated CSVs were converted into VECTO driving files (.vdri) with three geometric restrictions applied to the target speed: curvature-based reduction, safety cap on steep descents, and an altitude-corrected equivalent slope. 4. Each .vdri was simulated with VECTO 3.3.13 using a Class 9 Rigid Truck 6x2 (18.6 t total, 7.1 t payload) at a common maximum reference speed of 60 km/h. 5. The VECTO modal outputs (.vmod) were post-processed to per-route CSVs with time, distance and fuel-consumption totals; results were then aggregated into the tables provided in tablas_agregadas/.
