Iron-mediated selective burial of recalcitrant aromatic carbon along the hillslope-river-pond continuum following permafrost collapse
Description
This dataset contains 3D excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) and Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FT-MS) data generated to investigate iron-mediated selective burial of recalcitrant aromatic carbon along a hillslope-river-pond continuum following permafrost collapse. The 3D-EEM data characterize the fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) components, including humic-like, fulvic-like, and protein-like substances, to track changes in organic matter composition across the continuum. The FT-MS data provide high-resolution molecular-level information on dissolved organic carbon (DOC), with a focus on recalcitrant aromatic compounds and their associations with iron phases. Samples were collected from permafrost collapse features, hillslope soils, river water, and pond sediments. These datasets support the analysis of carbon preservation mechanisms, particularly the role of iron in stabilizing aromatic carbon during transport and transformation in permafrost-influenced aquatic-terrestrial ecosystems.
