Steps to reproduce

CRISPR expansion (indicative of spacer acquisition) was determined by PCR directly on cells from overnight cultures (DreamTaq, Thermo Fisher Scientific) using primers PF1887 + PF1989 for CRISPR1 and PF1888 + PF1990 for CRISPR2. PCR products were separated by 3% agarose gel electrophoresis, stained with ethidium bromide and spacer acquisition was quantified using ImageJ (Schneider et al., 2012).
