Replication Data for: Tapping into Excess Capacity: Chinese Machinery Export and African Industrialization

Description

This dataset contains the replication package for “Tapping into Excess Capacity: Chinese Machinery Export and African Industrialization,” accepted for publication in the Journal of International Economics. The package includes replication code, analysis-ready datasets, public-source inputs, execution logs, generated tables and figures, figure source files, and the LaTeX manuscript source. The README file provides software and hardware requirements, data source and availability information, and table-by-table and figure-by-figure replication instructions. Some restricted raw inputs are not included because their licenses or confidentiality rules prohibit public redistribution. The code preserves the expected file paths for authorized users who have access to those restricted sources. Analysis-ready datasets are included to support replication review, subject to the restrictions described in the README.

Steps to reproduce

See documentation/README.pdf for full instructions. 1. Download and unzip the replication package. Treat the unzipped folder as the package root. 2. Read README.pdf before running any code. The README lists software requirements, hardware requirements, data restrictions, and table-by-table and figure-by-figure replication instructions. 3. Install the required Stata packages and R packages listed in the README. The Stata dependency check is code/check_stata_packages.do. 4. To reproduce local main-text results, run: stata do code/1_runcode.do This reproduces Figure 1 and Tables 3-5. Figure 2 is generated separately with: Rscript code/build_figure_taskspatial.R 5. To reproduce server first-stage results for Tables 1-2 and Appendix Table A6, run the server workflow on a high-memory HPC system: stata do code/2_serverrun.do Then reconstruct the final LaTeX tables from the included server logs with: python code/build_server_tables_from_logs.py 6. To reproduce Appendix Table A1 first-stage summary outputs, run: stata do code/2_serverrun_summary.do 7. To reproduce the remaining local appendix results, run: stata do code/3_run_appendix_code.do 8. Generated tables are written to tab/Result/ and tab/Results/. Figures and journal artwork source files are stored in tab/ and tab/Figure_Source_Files/. The manuscript source and compiled PDF are in manuscript/. 9. Full raw-to-results replication requires authorized access to restricted raw inputs that are not publicly redistributed. The README lists the excluded raw files, their expected paths, and the reason for exclusion.
