Data used in the following study: COVID-19 Pandemic and Insurers’ Profitability: A Comparative Analysis of the Largest South American Economies.

Steps to reproduce

For the macroeconomic variables, we accessed the official websites of the respective national institutions in each country and manually collected the data for each variable. For Argentina, interest rate data were obtained from the Banco Central de la República Argentina (https://www.bcra.gob.ar), while inflation, unemployment, and GDP data were collected from the Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INDEC) (https://www.indec.gob.ar). For Brazil, interest rate data were obtained from the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) (https://www3.bcb.gov.br/sgspub/), while inflation, unemployment, and GDP data were collected from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) (https://sidra.ibge.gov.br). For Chile, interest rate and GDP data were obtained from the Banco Central de Chile (https://www.bcentral.cl/web/banco-central), while inflation and unemployment data were collected from the Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (https://www.ine.gob.cl). For Colombia, interest rate data were obtained from Banco de la República (https://www.banrep.gov.co), while inflation, unemployment, and GDP data were collected from the Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE) (https://www.dane.gov.co). For the microeconomic variables, we accessed the official insurance-sector databases of each country and manually collected the insurance companies’ financial and accounting data. For Argentina, all insurance data were obtained from the Superintendencia de Seguros de la Nación (SSN) (https://www.argentina.gob.ar/superintendencia-de-seguros/estadisticas/estados-patrimoniales). For Brazil, all insurance data were obtained from the Superintendência de Seguros Privados (SUSEP) (https://www2.susep.gov.br/menuestatistica/ses/principal.aspx). For Chile, general insurance data were collected from the Comisión para el Mercado Financiero (CMF) (https://www.cmfchile.cl/institucional/estadisticas/seg_gen_fecu_index.php?lang=es&tiposociedad=A), and life insurance data were collected from the CMF life insurance database (https://www.cmfchile.cl/institucional/estadisticas/seg_vida_fecu_index.php?lang=es&tiposociedad=A). For Colombia, general insurance data were obtained from the database for general insurance companies (https://www.superfinanciera.gov.co/publicaciones/10115082/historico-companias-de-seguros-generales-niif/), and life insurance data were obtained from the database for life insurance companies (https://www.superfinanciera.gov.co/publicaciones/10115083/historico-companias-de-seguros-de-vida-niif/).
