A harmonized, traceable dataset of brominated flame retardant occurrence across products and material streams
Description
The dataset compiles measured occurrence levels of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in food products, consumer products, and product-derived waste or recycled materials. It was constructed from 177 peer-reviewed publications published between 2004 and 2025 and retrieved from PubMed and the Web of Science Core Collection. The released table contains 6,239 record-by-record verified occurrence records organized under 75 standardized fields. The dataset records bibliographic provenance, product and sample attributes, sampling geography, pollutant identity, concentration measurements, detection and qualification flags, unit and basis harmonization, and product classification using the United Nations Central Product Classification (CPC) version 3. Each record retains source-publication information, evidence location, and a traceability note so that users can verify the original value in the corresponding table, figure, page, or supporting-information item. Pollutant names, abbreviations, CAS numbers where available, BFR family groupings, concentration units, measurement bases, product names, and geographic attributes were harmonized to support filtering and aggregation by product, pollutant, region, time, and measurement basis. The dataset includes legacy and novel BFRs, including PBDEs, HBCDD, TBBPA, DBDPE, and other related analytes. It is intended to support emerging-contaminant exposure assessment, product and material life-cycle screening, regulatory prioritization, and comparative analysis of BFR occurrence in products and material streams. Users should consider the qualifiers, standardized basis, detection-status fields, and traceability notes before aggregating records, because the source publications differ in sampling design, reporting basis, summed-analyte definitions, and metadata completeness.
