A Study on Normative Nerve Conduction Parameters in the Upper and Lower Limbs of Healthy Young Adults

This study aimed to establish normative reference values for motor nerve conduction parameters in healthy young adults aged 18–25 years and to assess the influence of demographic factors such as age, gender, height, weight, BMI, and limb length on these parameters. A total of 195 participants underwent standardized nerve conduction studies for the median, ulnar, radial, tibial, and common peroneal nerves. The results demonstrated that while age and gender had minimal impact, height and BMI significantly influenced nerve function showing positive correlations with latency and negative correlations with conduction velocity, particularly in endomorphic individuals. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating body composition and anthropometric measures when interpreting nerve conduction studies, thus supporting the need for somatotype-specific reference values to enhance diagnostic precision in clinical and research settings.

Steps to reproduce

A total of 195 healthy young adults aged 18–25 years were recruited through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Nerve conduction studies were performed, and motor parameters like latency, duration, amplitude, and conduction velocity were recorded for the median, ulnar, radial, tibial, and common peroneal nerves. Standard supramaximal stimulation was applied at two stimulation sites per nerve. The data was then analysed using SPSS software.
