Reference pigment samples of 0.5 mg were weighed for extraction by 4% boron trifluoride in methanol. An Agilent Technologies 1200 Series HPLC system coupled to a 1200 Photo Diode Array detector and a Bruker HCT (high capacity spherical traps) electronic spray ionization MS was used to analyze the extract from the samples. An Agilent Poroshell 120 EC C18 column (2.1×100 mm, particle size 2.7 µm) with a pre-column of the same type was used. The mobile phase comprised 0.1% formic acid in 95% aqueous methanol (v/v) (eluent A), and 0.1% formic acid in pure methanol (eluent B). Flow rate was 0.3 mL min-1 and column temperature was 40 °C. MS ionization was carried out in negative mode. Ultra Scan was used, with m/z range 50-1000 and speed 26,000 m/z second-1. Target Mass was set at 400 m/z. Data processing was performed using Bruker Daltonics DataAnalysis.
