Food waste in households in Latvia

In order to find out the habits and opinions of Latvian citizens regarding food waste and to understand the real situation in Latvian households, a survey questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire was based on a questionnaire developed by Polish researchers (Misiak & Sobol, 2020) - the Food Wasting Behaviours Questionnaire, which was supplemented with questions according to the objectives of the study. The questionnaire was designed in three parts, where the first part focused on daily habits related to food, the second part - consumers' opinions on food waste and food waste management, the third part - frequency of shopping for different product groups and finally basic information about the household. The questionnaire was designed in the form of statements where the respondent had to choose the most appropriate answer. The questionnaire was created in the Google Forms template, published on the website of the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies, distributed on social networks, and informed about the survey on radio and television. The questionnaire was distributed from 6 June 2024 to 30 January 2025. 1336 respondents from different regions of Latvia, representing different age groups with different numbers of household members, participated in the survey.
