Gender Quotas and CO2
Description
Replication package for the paper "Gender Quotas and National CO₂ Emissions." The package provides the dataset, code, and original session log required to reproduce the paper's main results. Dataset. A balanced panel of 102 countries observed annually from 1995 to 2022 (2,856 country-year observations). Of the 102 countries, 34 adopt a national electoral gender quota between 2002 and 2015, distributed across twelve cohorts; the remaining 68 are never-treated and serve as comparators. The panel integrates CO₂ emissions from the Global Carbon Project (via Our World in Data), electoral gender-quota adoption dates from International IDEA's Gender Quotas Database, women's parliamentary share and economic controls from the World Bank's World Development Indicators, renewable-energy statistics from IRENA, climate-treaty ratification dates from the United Nations Treaty Collection, V-Dem political-power indices, and climate legislation from the LSE Climate Change Laws of the World database. Code. Stata 14+ do-files that reproduce the headline Callaway and Sant'Anna (2021) doubly-robust difference-in-differences estimates, the event-study dynamics, first-stage and V-Dem channel results, the mechanism analysis on treaty commitments and renewable-energy deployment, regional and income heterogeneity, the robustness battery, and the Rambachan and Roth (2023) honest sensitivity bounds. A master script runs the full pipeline. The package also includes the Python pipeline that originally constructed the analysis panel from the raw upstream sources. Provenance. The manuscript analysis was conducted interactively in the Stata Console; the complete session log capturing every command and its output is included as original_session/stata_did_log.smcl for verification.
