Description

This dataset provides the full replication package for the CUP-W (Clarity, Usefulness, Practicality, Workload/Wellbeing) instrument and analytic framework used in the study “From Proxies to Practice: Bringing Upper Echelons Theory Back to the Boardroom through a CEO Profile Workbook and a Five-Case Comparative Study” (Bonelli, 2025). The CUP-W framework operationalizes key constructs from Upper Echelons Theory (UET)—managerial discretion, job demands, and executive orientation—through a concise, field-portable toolkit for qualitative and mixed-methods research. The package includes all editable templates and analytic tools needed to replicate or adapt the methodology across organizations and national contexts. Contents • 01_Instrument_CUPW.docx – 16-item self-assessment instrument measuring four dimensions of work quality on a 5-point Likert scale. • 02_CEO_Profile_Workbook_CUP-W_Interview_Form.docx – Semi-structured interview guide with 1–7 rating anchors and reflective prompts aligned with UET constructs. • 03_Codebook_and_Reliability.xlsx – Editable codebook with definitions, inclusion/exclusion criteria, anonymized examples, and an automated Cohen’s κ reliability calculator. • 04_Evidence_Matrix_Template.xlsx – 13-column working spreadsheet for consolidating coded findings, with built-in dropdowns for evidence strength, triangulation, and status. • 05_README_CUPW.docx – Metadata, version details, and citation instructions. Use and Scope The materials can be directly employed in academic research, executive assessments, or teaching contexts where strategic cognition, discretion, and leadership behavior are examined. They are intended for replication, adaptation, or training purposes. All files are blank, clean, and free of any participant data.

Files

Steps to reproduce

Download all five files from the CUP-W replication package. Ensure the Word and Excel components remain in the same folder to preserve cross-referencing. Review the instrument and guide: Open 01_Instrument_CUPW.docx to view the 16-item self-assessment form. Use 02_CEO_Profile_Workbook_CUP-W_Interview_Form.docx as the semi-structured interview guide. Record responses directly in the editable fields or print for field use. Collect and organize data: Conduct interviews or surveys following the CUP-W structure (sections A–G). Record numerical ratings (1–5 or 1–7) and qualitative notes. Save anonymized transcripts or summaries for later coding. Code the data using 03_Codebook_and_Reliability.xlsx: Enter quotes or short segments under the appropriate codes (C1–W1, OTHER). For inter-coder reliability, replace the example confusion matrix with your own counts; Cohen’s κ will update automatically. Adjust or extend codes as needed for local context. Summarize evidence in 04_Evidence_Matrix_Template.xlsx: Enter one row per finding. Use dropdown menus to select source, CUP-W dimension, evidence strength, triangulation type, and implementation status. Keep “Finding (1 sentence)” concise (≤150 characters). Interpret and visualize results: Aggregate subscale scores or coded themes. Identify convergent and divergent patterns between interviews or cases. Optional: create simple charts or heatmaps from the Evidence Matrix to display alignment with CUP-W dimensions. Cite the dataset using the reference provided in 05_README_CUPW.docx. All files are self-contained and ready for replication or adaptation in qualitative or mixed-methods studies. No proprietary software is required beyond Microsoft Word or Excel (or compatible open-source equivalents such as LibreOffice or Google Sheets).
