Description

Twenty, first-year URiM (underrepresented in medicine) medical students at the Perelman School of Medicine, including 10 students who participated in the Penn Assess Summer Scholars Program (PASS) and 10 non-PASS peers, were queried about their past research experiences and their perceptions about medical school related research. At the start of medical school, participants completed a structured interview that focused on premedical school research experiences. Participants were then asked to complete a follow up interview with the same interviewer a year later. The second interview shifted focus to research experiences in the summer between the first and second year of medical school, as well as any other research experiences and identity interactions in these spaces.
